4 Lesson plan #1

Lesson Plan

Simplify Expressions by Combining Like Terms

Target Audience: Grade 8

Objective(s): Students will be able to simplify expressions by combining like terms.

  • Students will learn the rules to combine like terms.
  • Students will learn how to combine like terms.
  • Students will practice to simplify expression by combining like terms.
  • Recomend students to access this link to review the multiplication table

Prior Knowledge: Students should know what like terms and variables are such as variables rose to the same power and multiplication table http://blogs.york.cuny.edu/wp/athompson8/tutorial-for-times-table/

Lesson Components:

  • Do now
  • Instruction
  • Guided practice exercises
  •  Assignments

Materials:

Student book, paper, and pencil, calculators

Do Now:Simplify

  • 4x+3r – 2x
  • x – 2xy + 6x + 7yx
  • 10x + 9y – 8x

Instruction:Examples

  • x(2x^2 – 4) + 3x(x^2  – 6x – 3 )
  • 6x(x + 3xy ) – ( 9xy + 5 – 5x)
  • 9(x^2 + 9xy) – 3x(8x + xy ) + 8

Guided Practice:Simplify by combining like terms

  • (5y + 3xy )  + y(y – 10xy)
  • (3t^2 – 8x) – t(7t + 10x)
Assignments:

  • 4r( 2r – 2ry) + 7ry( 6r – 4ry)
  • y(5x – 15y) + (y^2 – 8xy + 9y)
  • (5t + 8x) – 8t(2x + 3t – 2) +  10t

Reflection: After learning and acquiring the skills to simplify expressions by combining like terms students will feel confident enough to move to the next level of algebraic expressions and apply the knowledge already acquired
