Teaching Philosophy
My learning theory since the first day I decided to be a teacher was Constructivist learning theory. The reason why I chose this particular theory was because of my history teacher from high school, Mr. Cohen. His style of teaching was unlike any other teacher I had in the past, he opened my eyes to learning in a way I never learned before. Instead of just talking and lecturing to the class Mr. Cohen, made the lesson out to be fun. He gave us all the tools that we needed to understand the lesson and I started to see that we as students could learn on our own. This style of teaching gave me an epiphany, after I finished Mr. Cohen’s class I noticed that I remembered everything he thought us. I aced his examinations and felt like I really learned something, instead of my other classes in which, after the one test I would forget everything. There are many reasons why constructivist-learning theory sets itself apart from other learning theories, one of its biggest advantages is that it makes the student get actively engaged in the learning process and this can be made fun for the students.
The founders of this theory are Piaget, Dewey and Bruner. These three believed that the knowledge students have can be built on prior knowledge, and if teachers can take that in to account then they can get there students to learn in a fun and exciting way.
People believe that in constructivist learning theory that students don’t learn much and anything goes but that is not so. Once a student has learned something then they must discuss it in groups or writings. A large amount of the work is based on engagement with other students and the teacher. This helps those students who feel overwhelmed when it comes to taking tests, and I believe that tests are not a good way to judge if a student has learned anything in class.
I believe that students that leave my class should be able to be active and productive members of society, they should be able to engage with others who have different ideas, goals and values. They should be able to articulate thoughts and work towards helping there community and making the world a better place.
